Established in 2006, the GEOFFREY BEENE CANCER RESEARCH CENTER AT MEMORIAL SLOAN-KETTERING CANCER CENTER is the lead recipient of GEOFFREY BEENE's charitable contributions, over $106,000,000 so far. Dedicated to revolutionary new research about how cancer works at the cellular level, the Center is the core research facility at Sloan-Kettering, supporting innovative research approaches to the treatment and cure of cancer.

"I orchestrated the creation of the Geoffrey Beene Cancer Research Center as the centerpiece of my goal to transform an iconic designer brand into a business/philanthropic model supporting 'out of the box' initial stage research for the treatment and prevention of cancer," says G. Thompson Hutton, the Trustee of the GEOFFREY BEENE FOUNDATION, and President of GEOFFREY BEENE, LLC.

"The hallmark of the GEOFFREY BEENE CANCER RESEARCH CENTER at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center is its focus on revolutionary new research approaches across a variety of cancers, strategies that will lead to prevention through improved diagnostics and enhanced quality of life treatments toward the ultimate goal of making cancer a more manageable and perhaps one day, a curable disease.

Our 2010 Rock Stars of Science campaign salutes researchers like Drs. Thompson, Sawyers, and Massagué (each of whom is a member of the Geoffrey Beene Cancer Research Center Executive Committee) for their scientific leadership, life-saving therapies, and generosity in helping to excite the next generation about careers in science."

Rock S.O.S™ debuted as a six-page spread in the June 2009 issue of GQ in which former MSKCC President Harold Varmus was a featured Rock Star with singer, cancer advocate Sheryl Crow. The campaign aims to make careers in science "cool" by pairing well-known rock stars and celebrities with some of the nation's leading investigators. It also draws attention to the problem of scientific illiteracy in the US and urges increases in federal funding for medical research.
